Yahoo Travel!: Charleston among 'Ten Great Spring Break Destinations'

Yahoo Travel!: Charleston among 'Ten Great Spring Break Destinations'

CHARLESTON (WCSC) - Yahoo Travel! recently released a list of "Ten Great Spring Break Destinations" and Charleston made the grade.

Charleston ranks alongside other United States spots like San Diego, Amelia Island in Florida, Lanai Island in Hawaii, and Yosemite National Park.

Writers of the online travel periodical had this to say about the Holy City:

Charming Charleston—just voted the nation’s friendliest city by Travel & Leisure magazine-- has something for everyone. Explore an antebellum mansion, go beachcombing along 90 miles of scenic coastline or test your golf skills at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which will host the 2012 PGA Championship in August. Charleston welcomes four million annual visitors and one of the best times to visit is in the spring, when flowers are in bloom and summer heat hasn't descended.

Rounding out the top 10 are: Charlottesville, Virginia; Decatur, Georgia; Houston, Texas; Louisville, Kentucky; New Orleans, Lousiana, and Raleigh, North Carolina.

LOWCOUNTRY (WCSC) - Live 5 News and Howell & Christmas Attorneys are partnering this year to supply "Helmets for Kids".

Honor Flight Lowcountry to fly WW2 vets to memorial

Honor Flight Lowcountry is seeking World War Two veterans who would like to visit the World War II Memorial on April 2. Honor Flight is also seeking applications for guardians, or escorts, who would like to accompany the veterans on this special day.

Honor Flight Lowcountry is an all volunteer organization that was founded in June of 2009 for the purpose of taking WWII veterans to visit their memorial at no expense to the veterans.  The memorial was not completed until 2004. Because of the veteran’s age and stage in life, most would not undertake such a trip on their own.

Over 500 Lowcountry veterans have visited the memorial on the five previous Honor Flights from Charleston.

Veterans and guardian applications can be found at their website. Guardians are asked to donate $500 for the privilege of escorting the veterans.
