Officials delay closure of Runway 15/33 | News
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
JOINT BASE CHARLESTON (WCSC) - The planned closure date for one of the runways at Joint Base Charleston has been postponed at the least to the start of April.
Officials had planned to close Runway 15/33 on March 1 for reconstruction, but have decided to delay the closure to allow additional time for the contractor to process and gain approval of required construction submittals prior to beginning work, helping to minimize the length of time the runway will be shut down.
Officials said they will make an announcement when a start date is finalized.
At 9,000 feet, Runway 15/33 is the longer of JB Charleston’s two runways supporting the 437th Airlift Wing and is the primary commercial runway for Charleston International Airport. With portions of the runway constructed in the 1940s, 15/33 is nearing the end of its lifespan. In order to maintain safe flight operations for military personnel and commercial passengers, the runway will undergo a complete reconstruction.
During the construction period, all air traffic will be moved to JB Charleston’s secondary runway 03/21.
