Marrington Elementary holds luau to show teacher appreciation

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON (WCSC) - The first week of May was teacher appreciation week at Marrington Elementary, and the PTO celebrated with a taste of the Hawaiian Islands.

The PTO held a luau themed lunch to show their appreciation for the Marrington Elementary teachers. They also provided the teachers with gifts and goodies.

The school Principal Barb Webber and her secretary Sheri Marangelli both showed their appreciation by cooking lunch to honor the school's teachers last Thursday.

Marrington students 'Jump Rope for Heart'

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON (WCSC) - Marrington Elementary School students recently participated in "Jump Rope for Heart," a special activity that took place during their physical education class, led by Coach Brandon Beckman. 

Jump Rope for Heart is a fundraiser sponsored by the American Heart Association and is a great opportunity for students to improve their physical and heart health, while also learning about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Jump Rope for Heart allows the students a chance to raise money for other children who are born with or suffer from heart disease and other heart problems.

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON (WCSC) - Berkeley County School District held a Teacher Recruitment Fair at Cain Bay High School two weeks ago.

Prospective teachers from across the country had the opportunity to speak with representatives from all of the schools in Berkeley County.

Marrington Elementary School had a pirate theme exhibit because Marrington Elemenatary School "treasures" education and their students.

GOOSE CREEK (WCSC) - The Berkeley County School District will hold a public meeting regarding the proposed 2012-13 budget tonight at Westview Middle School.

At 5 p.m., district administrators will present the proposed budget’s highlights and challenges and solicit stakeholder feedback. 

Westview Middle School is located at 101 Westview Drive.

50+ students compete in Multiplication Bee

BERKELEY COUNTY (WCSC) - The Berkeley County School District hosted its inaugural Multiplication Bee earlier this month at Westview Middle School. 

Top math students from the district's third, fourth and fifth grade classes competed for bragging rights as the District's official "Multiplication Whiz."  Contestants had ninety seconds to correctly answer as many multiplication problems as possible.

School district recognizes philanthropist

BERKELEY COUNTY – The Berkeley County School District along with the S. C. School Board Association (SCSBA) recently recognized local business woman and philanthropist Anita Zucker with the Champions for Public Education Award.  The honor is awarded quarterly by SCSBA to individuals or organizations across the state whose support of and contributions to public education have benefited an entire school district significantly.

The Berkeley County School District nominated Zucker for this year’s award.  “Anita brings a determined focus to the discussion of public education,” said Berkeley County School District Rodney Thompson.  “She makes sure public education is prioritized at the table with business leaders, is considered as an economic development tool when recruiting new businesses, and is recognized for its successes at all levels.”

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON (WCSC) - Jennifer Akiman, a scientist employed by High Touch High Tech, recently conducted an in-school science field trip for Marrington Elementary School 4th grade students. 

High Touch High Tech is a company that provides hands on science programs for elementary school classes that meet South Carolina Science Standards.  By providing students with fun, informative sessions where they are able to conduct science experiments, students develop a heightened understanding and appreciation for science.  

This will ultimately enable them to have a meaningful, lucrative career in one of the most critical career areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Science).
